(Food-Beverage-News.Com, October 30, 2012 ) Dothan, AL – Meals on Wheels (MOW) was initially started to insure that “No Senior goes hungry.” However, the Atlanta Meals on Wheels goes far beyond just providing warm meals. Their offerings include helping with home repairs and Senior centers, offering companionship and more.
Meals on Wheels provides transportation for Seniors age 55 and older to seven centers in Fulton County enabling Seniors to participate in chronic disease self-management, arts and crafts, and fitness classes. During this year, MOW has been instrumental in providing almost 60,000 Senior-days at the neighborhood centers.
Meals on Wheels has almost 900 Seniors on a waiting list who need home repair services ranging from minor to major repairs. These repairs are provided at low or no cost and allow Seniors to stay in their own homes and communities as they age. Today, MOW is in need of volunteers and financial donations to decrease the waiting list.
The continuing existence of the Vivian T. Minor Adult Day Health Center is greatly enhanced through the assistance of Meals on Wheels. Over the course of this year MOW has provided 5,500 meals to the center.
One other service provided by MOW is Senior assistance. Older volunteers can be connected with Seniors to provide companionship and simple care duties to those who may lack a support system. Other volunteers can be provided with opportunities to provide essential services. Over 75,000 volunteer hours have been seen this year.
Meals on Wheels in Atlanta plays a vital role in improving the lives of thousands of Atlanta area residents. MOW can be contacted by phone at 404-351-3889 or by visiting their website at www.scsatl.org.
