(Food-Beverage-News.Com, November 10, 2012 ) West Heidelberg Vic, Australia- A woman celebrating her 103rd birthday attributed her old age to simply eating a lot of cake. It may sound crazy, but Kathleen Murphy says her sweet tooth is what has gotten her this far.
Kathleen Murphy of Wimbledon, grew up in Ireland where she said she first developed her sweet tooth at a young age. Murphy then moved to the UK just before WWII to help take care of her sister’s sick husband. After moving she found a job with the Ministry of Defence where she worked until she retired, which by now is many years ago.
When asked about the secret to her old age, Murphy responded with a sweet and simple answer: "You see when I was five I was a fussy eater and would only eat sweet things, nothing else. My mother was beside herself so she took me to the village doctor in Skibbereen.
“The doctor took one look at me and said ‘well whatever she’s eating she looks well on it, so don’t be worrying. All my life I was told by well-meaning friends ‘eat such and such, you won’t survive on chocolate and fancy cakes’ - and where are they now?"
Murphy has outlived most of her friends and finds the advice given to her nearly 100 years ago very amusing at this point.
Murphy celebrated her impressive 103rd birthday on October 19th at the Woodlands Day Center in Colliers Wood with friends, family, and staff, where she of course had cake.
She has been visiting the Woodlands Day Center every day since it opened in 2000 with the exception of one day, her 100th birthday, when she chose to visit her 94 and 93 year-old nephews a short drive away in Cork.
The manager at the Woodlands Day Center, Janet Hooper, said, "Kathleen came in on our first day when we opened in 2000 saying ‘I’ll try it for the day’. "Twelve years on and she hasn't missed a day, and that’s seven days a week".
Murphy is still in great shape and hopes to still be devouring sweets at her 110th birthday party, which she plans to spend, where else, the Woodlands Day Center.
