Herbs and Spices: Antioxidants and Immune System Supporters reports Pollen Pressers

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, November 15, 2012 ) Santa Clara County, CA -- Herbs and spices not only add flavour to your diet, but they can provide important health benefits. Whether your ailing health problems include circulatory problems, allergies, or muscle cramps and pains, there are many different types of herbs that can help you keep you in good health.

Here, then, are the top nine herbs that you should consider adding to your meals on a regular basis:

(1) Thyme: Thyme, a common household herb used for a range of dishes, can also be used as a medicinal herb. It can be used in a range of circumstances, from killing germs to curing common colds. Two teaspoons of this herb pack in nearly 20 percent of our daily requirement for iron. Thyme is also rich in manganese, a mineral that boosts brain function and also contains many active principals found to have disease-preventing properties beneficial to body development.

(2) Parsley: Parsley contains calcium, B-complex vitamins and iron. It is also a source of magnesium and potassium. Parsley has been traditionally used for congestion and inflammation of the kidney and bladder, and it can aid with kidney stones and urine retention. Parsley’s root and leaves are a good source of help to the liver and spleen. It has also been proven to help individuals diagnosed with edema and diabetes get better. Parsley roots and seeds also contain ingredients that help produce muscle pain relief. Parsley juice may also be excellent for the blood vessels, capillaries and arterioles. Two tablespoons of fresh parsley may provide 150 percent of daily requirements for Vitamin K, which plays an important role in blood clotting, proper bone formation and liver function.

(3) Lemongrass: Lemongrass is best known as an ingredient used in SouthEast Asian cuisine. It is a great addition to meals and has medical properties that help reduce fever, ease muscle cramps, upset stomachs and migraine headaches. It is also packed with antioxidants, which aid in protecting against stress, a significant contributor to heart disease.

(4) Oregano: Oregano should be an abundant herb in your cooking. This herb contains 20 times more cancer-fighting antioxidants than other herbs and holds the same power as an entire apple.

(5) Rosemary. Rosemary helps fight off carcinogenic compounds created when meats are barbecued or grilled (Prevention, 2012). Rosemary also aids in increasing circulation and maintaining memory.

(6) Sage: Sage is a strongly flavored herb that also is a good, herbal addition to meals. This herb contains high levels of antioxidants, which not only aids in strengthening your immune system, but also increases your brain stamina. Sage has been around for more than 1,000 years and has been used to treat various health ailments. It contains rosemary acid, which acts as an effective anti-inflammatory agent in the body, proving beneficial to those individuals with joint and muscle pain. Sage can also help ease colds, coughs and excess mucous accumulation in the body. With sleep-inducing qualities, sage has been known to have calming properties that can be beneficial to those individuals suffering from insomnia (Livestrong, 2012).

(7) Cilantro: Cilantro is a common herb found in dishes throughout the world, from Spain to the Middle East. As a powerful natural cleansing agent, it has been used to remove heavy metals and other toxic agents in the body. Chemical compounds found in cilantro helps the tissues, blood and organs, and it encourages the body to eliminate harmful substances that are transported via the cardiovascular system.

(8) Lavender: has commonly been used in a range of home remedies. It’s calming effects have made it an important component in perfumes, body washes and scented candles. Lavender tea also helps to soothe headaches, nerves and stress. Additionally, it is a good source of calcium and vitamin A.

(9) Peppermint: has high antioxidant content. It helps to reduce food cravings and is recognized as a stomach healer, which aids with IBS, constipation, stomach aches and nausea. An additional benefit it has on the body is that it supports the immune system to fight common colds and flus.

As an important tip, do not forget that moderation here is key. You do not want to overuse any of these herbs. Although each of these herbs are highly beneficial to the body and your health, you want to make sure that you use these herbs in moderate amounts, as most they can be toxic when eaten in high amounts.
