Study Suggests Friends Mirror Friends in terms of Weight reports Fastest Way To Lose Weight Plan

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, November 21, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Recent studies have shown that women who surround themselves with healthy friends are more likely to feel better about themselves, have more confidence, and consequently get into better shape.

A study at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick found that women who are under more pressure to be thin and lose weight, have a harder time doing so.

The study examined the fact that overweight women with overweight friends are more likely to talk about it than an overweight person with healthy friends. It was concluded that with more “body talk” comes less individual confidence, which in turn, makes it even harder to lose weight.

For example, if a woman is out to eat with her two friends that are overweight, she is more likely to order something unhealthy if her friends do the same. If a woman is out to eat with healthy friends who order healthy food, the same mirroring will take place. This can often be a subconscious occurrence, but it proves that the less you think and talk about losing weight, the more likely you are to actually do it.

Dr. Louise Wasylkiw and Dr. Molly Williamson were the leaders of the study and said that friends influence each other through three process, “Perceived pressure to be thin, body-related talk, and perceptions.” According to the doctors, perceptions are much more powerful than realities. Those women who talk about how much they need to lose weight or that they should eat healthier often find reasons not to when surrounded by other women who feel the same way.

A Harvard Medical School study from 2007 surveyed over 12,000 people and discovered that people with overweight friends or family are more likely to become overweight. From the study, it was concluded an overweight person’s friends were 57% more likely to add weight than if they were around healthier people.

For overweight people, surrounding one’s self with healthier people can improve one’s health. Overweight friends means weight loss talk, which leads to self-confidence issues, which often reverts back to gaining weight. These studies say that who you surround one's self with can often make as much of a difference as what you do individually to get healthier.
