(Food-Beverage-News.Com, April 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, Ca -- According to a new study, groups of people given financial incentives lost more weight than individuals with the same goals and incentives. In another study, coworkers were able assist one another in tracking the shedding of pounds. Together, these studies, along with a growing number of previous data, show that groups have an easier time losing poundage. All of this suggests that fitness may have more to do with a social endeavor and behavior type.
In a study, researchers had overweight and obese employees at four separate companies. Workers at the two companies participated in group sessions on nutrition as well as behavior
modification. They were each instructed to follow low-calorie diets. The workers at the remaining two companies did not receive any intervention and followed typical health routines. The results noted that employees who participated in the interventions lost a significant amount of weight as compared to those who did not. More importantly perhaps, is that employees at the company wherein an intervention was held, but did not participate in the intervention themselves, also lost weight.
The authors of the study noted that the key sticking point of the program is the teamwork amongst the co workers. One recent set of data supports the idea of groups are a powerful motivator when it comes to maintaining weight loss.
Another recent study divided participants into three groups, with one group receiving a link to a weight loss network and active monthly weigh-in reminders, while another group was given the same information and a chance to earn $100. The third group was divided into small groups of five, and were told whichever group met their weight goals would receive $500 between them. The latter group was the most effective than the other participants.
The latter research noted that groups often believed that other teams would fail to do as well as them if they stuck to their plan; thus, the concept of defeating other teams was a motivator. Coupled with comradery and deontology of working for others, the groups each succeeded beyond the other study groups without such incentives.
