(Food-Beverage-News.Com, June 02, 2013 ) Toronto, Canada -- Each year, the American College of Sports Medicine releases a rankings report on how well each state competes in health fitness statistics. According to the report, while Minneapolis is under snow for three months out of the year, they still have the best ways to capitalize on the resources they have to stay healthy.
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Ryback is pleased to hear the news. “We get off the couch in every season,” he told HealthDay News.
To compile the results, researches at the American College of Sports Medicine took into account city policies, community resources, health access facilities, and local prevalence of chronic disease in 50 metro areas in the United States.
Minneapolis topped the rankings with 78.2 points. Coming in a close second was Washington D.C. with 77.7 points. San Francisco, Portland, and Denver rounded up the top five on the list.
Memphis, Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky, San Antonio, Texas and Detroit, Michigan were the five lowest scoring cities for health. Once again, Oklahoma City ranked last in the nation for measures of health. It's fallen to the bottom of the list each year since 2008, the first year of the AFI rankings.
Despite its dead-last position, Oklahoma City is making positive changes to move in the right direction for health. When the city debuted on the list, it totaled a score of 24 points. This year, the metro area scored 31.2 on measures of health, wellness and fitness. The American College of Sports Medicine met with city leaders in 2011 to work on a plan to improve the city's fitness, and it looked like it worked.
The biggest movers on the list were Portland and Denver. Portland jumped from number seven in 2012 to take the Third Fittest City slot this year. Denver crept from number nine to number five.
