(Food-Beverage-News.Com, June 02, 2013 ) England, UK -- According to a report published by JAMA Dermatology, losing weight by using a low calorie diet and exercise could relieve symptoms of psoriasis for overweight patients.
Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin condition that occurs in about 2 percent of all people in North America and Northern Europe. According to the authors in the study’s background, the role of weight loss as a treatment for psoriasis for obese people is unclear, but losing weight may lesson the prevalence and reduce obesity-induced inflammation to the skin, improving the disease itself.
The study was conducted with a randomized sample of 60 obese patients who suffer from psoriasis. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups: One, an intervention group that followed a low-calorie diet, under 2,000 calories a day, and two, a control group that was not asked to change their dietary habits but were told to try and eat healthier foods.
The main outcomes researchers measured were the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) after 16 weeks and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI).
Peter Jensen, M.D., Ph.D., of the Copenhagen University Hospital Gentofte, Denmark, and colleagues found that at week 16, the mean (average) body weight loss was almost 34 pounds (15.4 kg) greater in the intervention group than in the control group.
According to the study results, the mean differences in PASI and DLQI, which also favored the intervention group, were -2.0 and -2.0 respectively. The study notes that the mean between-group difference in PASI of -2.0 did not reach statistical significance. In other words, losing weight may help lower the PASI index and, in turn, improve the skin disease.
