what's not in Yummy Yammy® brand Sweet Potato Salsas
(Food-Beverage-News.Com, October 22, 2014 ) Norwich, VT -- It's not as simple as "not eating meat" any more. Today's vegetarian and vegan community go quite a bit further, avoiding products that include gelatin, rennet, lard, or honey, and never wearing leather or buying anything that was tested on animals or even has ingredients that were tested on animals.
While to a meat-eating crowd this kind of commitment may seem extreme, to the Boston Vegetarian Society it's their normal. And nowhere is that normal on display like the annual Boston Vegetarian Festival.
Saturday October 25 and Sunday October 26 this year will be the 19th annual festival celebrating vegetarian and vegan living with dozens of vendor displays showing off vegan foods and life products to thousands of festival goers.
"This is our second year and I wouldn't miss it," exclaims Lisa Johnson, owner of Yummy Yammy, a Vermont company that makes sweet potato salsas. "Folks who make a point to come to this festival are the perfect customer for me," she explains. "They're willing to taste our salsas because they're entirely vegan, but they fall in love with our salsas because they taste great."
Claiming to be the "world's only" sweet potato salsas, Yummy Yammy's website lists all product ingredients, and offers recipes and video recipes to customers. When asked why she includes cheese and other non-vegan recipe ingredients on her site, Johnson describes her customer base as wider than vegans.
"Most of my customers don't live a vegan lifestyle at all, but for those that do, ours is the perfect food: delicious, vegan, and nutrient-dense. When I first created these recipes in my kitchen in Vermont, it didn't even occur to me at first that I had made 'vegan salsas'. I just made what I like, and I certainly wasn't going to add any industrial fats or cheeses or meats. Instead, my customers can add their own cheese or chicken at home if they like. Or not."
Evelyn Kimber, the coordinator of the festival, wants to make sure everyone knows you don't have to be vegan or even vegetarian to enjoy attending the vegetarian celebration. "Whether you are a longtime vegetarian or vegan, or someone simply wanting to add more delicious plant-based foods to your meal repertoire, or if you are just curious what it's all about, you are welcome here!" assures Kimber.
The Boston Vegetarian Festival runs Saturday and Sunday October 25 & 26, at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center at 1350 Tremont Street, Boston, Massachusetts, which is just across the street from the Roxbury Crossing station on the Orange Line of the T. The general public gains free admission 11-6 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday, and an optional $5 earns preview admission at 10am on Saturday.
