Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site at www.cdc.gov.

Safeway continues to monitor the ongoing recall associated with peanut butter based products due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Several types of products including crackers, cookies and ice-cream have recently been recalled by manufacturers that use peanut butter and peanut paste as an ingredient. Consumers can also monitor the situation at the FDA website where additional information and a complete listing of products subject to the nationwide recalls linked to peanut butter is available.
