(Food-Beverage-News.Com, September 27, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- It has been shown that those who are obese and go through weight-loss surgeries have been known to gain at least six extra years of health benefits. Included in those benefits are less diabetes cases, lowered cholesterol levels, and lower blood pressure. However, with all these benefits, the downfall remains the medical costs that come with them.
Weight-loss surgery has been linked to cases of gallstones and anemia, which also ended up raising the future medical costs following such surgery. According to the World Health Organization, the number of obese people worldwide top the scales at more than 500 million people. It has been found that procedures, such as weight-loss surgery, are underused. Only around 1 percent of the people who qualify for the surgery actually follow through with the operation.
It has been reported by two public-health foundations, that the rise in costs associated with obesity will add $66 billion in expenses to the nation’s health-care bill. States are showing an obesity rate of over 44 percent. If this rate continues, more than 60 percent of adults in more than 12 states will be obese by 2030. The rates of severely obese people in the U.S. is growing at an alarming rate, more so than those with moderate obesity.
Weight-loss surgery is highly effective in helping people drop the weight. The medical costs incurred following surgery is being studied using comparisons between people who had and didn’t have the surgery. The operation did end up reducing overall annual costs spent on medications after the first six years.
Patients who had surgery spent $930 versus those who didn’t have the surgery who spent $1,123. These groups were then studied longer term, seven to 20 years, and it showed that the biggest difference was the lower costs of diabetes and heart disease care drugs in those who had the surgery.
However, based on findings, weight-loss surgeries do appear to result in better health benefits than those using conventional obesity treatments, but it comes at a higher cost in the long run.
