Aerobic Exercise Most Effective in Losing Weight reports Fat Loss Factor Report

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 28, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Aerobic exercises are found to be the best for burning fat and losing weight, at least as far as a U.S. Study is concerned.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Duke University Medical Center. The study was one of the largest randomized trials to analyze the reactions by the body in regards to composition from aerobic exercises, weight training, as well as combinations of both. The target groups were obese adults without diabetes.

Standard aerobic exercises include walking, running, and swimming. The exercises have been proven to proven to be effective for losing weight, according to the Journal of Applied Physiology reports.

The exercises also help weight loss by increasing an individuals resting metabolic rate, which helps burn calories even when at rest, according to a Duke statement.

"Given that approximately two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight due to excess body fat, we want to offer clear, evidence-based exercise recommendations that will truly help people lose weight and body fat," said Leslie H. Willis, exercise physiologist, who led the study.

The researchers enrolled over 200 individuals who were overweight or obese in the study. The individuals were assigned one of three exercise groups (randomly). The three groups included resistance (weight) training, aerobic training (12 miles per week), and aerobic plus resistance training. The latter was a three-day per week program.

Those assigned to the aerobic training and aerobic resistance training lost a higher average of weight than those who simply did resistance training. In fact, those within the resistance group gained weight due to the increase in lean body mass. That is to say, that those who engaged in weight training gained lean muscle, which increased weight due to muscle being heavier than fat.

The combo exercise group had mixed results.

"Balancing time commitments against health benefits, our study suggests that aerobic exercise is the best option for reducing fat mass and body mass," said Cris A. Slentz, Duke exercise physiologist and study co-author.

"Its not that resistance training isn't good for you; it's just not very good at burning fat," Slentz said.
