(Food-Beverage-News.Com, December 29, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The waistlines of the males in the United Kingdom have expanded considerably. So much so that two-third of men and nearly as many women are now categorized as overweight, according to the NHS report that has been released.
In England, 24% of males and 26% of women now fall under the category of obese, while 65% of men and 58% of women are considered either overweight or obese.
Cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhorta recently examined the extent of obesity as part of an inquiry by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, and stated that the figures were the worst that has ever been seen by the England.
"It's absolutely shocking that 65% of men and 58% of women have a dangerously unhealthy weight. The biggest explanation for this trend is our obesgenic food environment – the oversupply of cheap, sugary food", said Malhotra, who works at a London hospital.
The term 'overweight' is defined by having a BMI between 25 and 29, while 30 and above is considered obese. BMI is calculated by one's weight divided by the square of their height. Doctors and health ministers alike state that people ought to maintain normal weight, which is a BMI calculated at 18.5-24, in order to minimize risks associated with weight-related illness.
When a report was released in 1993 under similar criteria, 13% and 16% of women were considered to be obese.
"England already has some of the highest rates of obesity in the developed world. These findings highlight the need to be food aware and honest about our eating habits," said Anna Soubry, the public health minister.
There is a silver lining in the survey: The growth in obesity does appear to be slowing overall.
"The rate of increase in obesity prevalence has been slower in the second half of the period than the first half, and there are indications that the trend may be flattening out over recent years," it said. But obesity in women in 2011 was the highest since 1993, it added.
