Study Proves People Want Assistance But WonÂ’t Pay

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, April 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While most overweight adults agree that the health insurance benefits designed to promote weight loss are a step in the right direction, many do not want to pay extra for such health care initiatives. That is the conclusion of a new study from the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Thanks to the effort to control escalating medical spending stemming from the consequences of obesity, many insurance plans are now including wellness benefits. According to the report, that involve discounts on gym memberships, access to commercial weight loss programs, as well as classes in nutrition and healthy living.

"Prior research has shown that wellness benefits can successfully change health behaviors and reduce medical spending," reports author Marian Jarlenski, a Ph.D. candidate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, referring to an earlier study that found that wellness benefits are estimated to save $3.27 in medical costs for every $1 spent.

The latest study has analyzed a national survey response total from over 600 overweight and obese adults who were asked about weight loss benefits that were offered were helpful.

Many respondents totally 83% of the overall surveyed cited specific benefit as helpful, while 27% pointed to the gym membership, and 16% saying the commercial weight loss programs listed were most hopeful. Still, two-thirds stated that benefits would be helpful while still being unwilling to pay extra for them.

"Without asking more detailed follow-up questions, we can't know with certainty why respondents were not willing to pay more for benefits they said would be helpful," Jarlenski explained. "A lower willingness to pay might indicate a less robust level of support for the benefits."

The authors of the study concluded that given the overall effectiveness of saving medical costs reducing health complications, wellness benefits ought to be offered to all individuals.

"We know that obesity raises health care costs,” explained Dr. Paul Fishman, a senior investigator specializing in health services and economics at Group Health Research Institute. “But what we haven't shown convincingly over time is the causal effect that providing the benefit to wellness and preventive programs got people to use the benefit, then change their behavior and then save insurers money," he explained.
