Study Suggests Unroasted Coffee Bean Extract Beneficial

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, April 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new preliminary study has suggested that the unroasted coffee bean extracts may be a tool against uncontrolled blood sugar levels, which is a characteristic of diabetes.

The study is reportedly small, and is only preliminary, but it has researchers excited of the possibilities. The research was handled in India on normal-weight participants with normal glucose blood levels, and findings showed that various doses of the supplement containing green coffee extract lowered blood sugars. Higher doses showed larger drops, which is a positive sign for a good correlation.

"If this can influence a normal person's [glucose levels], then it should be even better for diabetics because they have a problem," said study author Joe Vinson, a professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania. "The green coffee [extract] is the best aspect of coffee to be taken, I think."

The study was funded by Applied Foods of Austin, Texas. Vinson was scheduled to present the research that was handled in India on Tuesday at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans. Studies presented at the conference are often not fully peer-reviewed.

Nearly 26 million Americans have type 2 diabetes according to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Diabetes is also linked to conditions including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-leg amputation.

There has been intensive research put toward the potential of coffee. A 2012 study in the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that death rates drop for each additional cup of the brew consumed per day. There have been other studies that show indications that each additional daily cup is associated with a 7% drop in risk of development of type 2 diabetes.

In the recent study, Vinson analyzed 30 men and women of normal weight and gave them supplements containing 100-400 milligrams of the extract. All doses affected blood sugar positively, with higher doses benefiting the participant more.
