After noticing a recent growth trend in the vintage spirits industry, a small home products company "Simple Home Creations" has just unveiled "ROX" silicone ice ball molds. This mold makes 4 crystal clear ice balls which are the new, popular method of chilling premium liquors. Up until now, most ice spheres have been formed using expensive ice presses found only in the swankiest whiskey bars. "ROX" ice molds fill the need for this product at a fraction of the price.
According to a recent "Time" magazine article, The liquor industry reported a 4% increase in liquor sales in 2011, with particularly strong increases in exports of American spirits and high-end "super premium" beverages (both up more than 10%). The boost in booze spending, particularly in terms of pricey brands, has been welcomed as an indicator of continued economic prosperity.
This increase in demand for high-end spirits, has also led to innovative ways to enjoy the "pure" taste of the drink whether it be straight up or on ice. However, this posed a problem to the patrons who preferred their whiskey chilled, but not watered down. This originated the oversized ice sphere to replace the standard ice cube. Because the ice is in one big chunk and the spherical shape has less surface area than traditional ice, the drink is chilled without a rapid melting of the ice.
As previously mentioned, the first products in this category were the high-end ice presses used in fancy bars. These simple machines were typically made of aluminum and used the weight of the metal to compress and form ice blocks into ice spheres without any heat or electricity. Although they worked quite well, their main quality was the theatrics of watching the ball form before your very eyes. The downside to these presses was their price which could top $1,000. This price is fine for whiskey bars and millionaires, but a more economical solution was necessary for the average Joe on the street.
"ROX" ice sphere molds are made of FDA approved silicone and currently sell for less than $20. Although they lack the stage appeal of the expensive ice presses, the ice balls are of similar, if not equal, quality to ice press balls. "ROX" molds are easy to use, dishwasher safe, and will not spill in the freezer.
