Learn more about these FDA approved, collapsible measuring cups
(Food-Beverage-News.Com, June 29, 2013 ) Belton, Missouri -- The main difference between liquid and dry measuring cups is in how they are meant to be used. Although both types of measuring cup can be used for either liquid or dry substances, the individual design of each makes it harder to get an accurate measurement if used interchangeably.
With dry measuring the cup is filled to all the way to the brim by scooping the dry contents out of the box or bag and then using a knife or other flat object to pack down and level the contents with the top of the measure cup. It is hard to get an exact measurement of a liquid in a dry cup. The liquid would have to be filled to the brim making it difficult to transport it to a mixing bowl or other container without losing some of the liquid and making a mess.
A liquid measuring cup has a handle, a pour spout and measurement indicators, generally from a quarter cup to six ounces, on the side of the cup. In order to get an accurate measurement, the measure cup must be placed on a level surface where the person doing the measuring can look at the side of the measure cup at eye level. They are generally made from clear plastic or glass. A liquid measuring cup will not give an exact measurement for dry substances because you cannot pack and level the substance accurately.
Graduated measuring cups allow accurate measuring and have the added benefit of easy storage. Dry graduated measuring cups generally come in a set of four cups that measure a quarter cup, a third cup, one half cup and one cup. Because of their graduating sizes, they fit snuggly inside each other for storage.
Liquid measuring cups are graduated by design. The measurement marks are printed on the side of the measure cup, generally a quarter cup, one half cup, 6 ounces and up. Their full capacity is usually either two or four cups although they can be purchased to measure up to a quart of liquid.
Measuring cups are mainly used for obtaining accurate measurements for ingredients in recipes. They are also used for measuring everything from dry detergent to liquid fabric softener. These devices are handy in the kitchen, the laundry room and any other area where accurate dry or liquid measurements are needed.
