(Food-Beverage-News.Com, July 07, 2013 ) Calgary, Canada -- A new study suggests than on average, Americans eat out on an average of four to five times a week. Researchers found that adults underestimate the calories in their restaurant meal by 20 percent. Parents of school age children underestimate calories by 23 percent and teenagers have the least idea of the nutritional value of their meals, by underestimating calories by 34 percent.
Over the course of the past decade, many states and cities have passed laws that require certain restaurants to publish nutrition information, such as caloric content at minimum on their menus in an effort to help people make better choices for what they are eating. The U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will require all chain restaurants in America with a minimum of 20 locations to print calorie content.
Another study published in the Journal of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics shows that nutrition labeling may lead restaurants to offer better, healthier food options. The study found that after a year and a half of being required to publish nutrition information, restaurants were offering new meals with less calories as a result of the demand for better food.
Nutritionist and trainer Harley Pasternak says that understanding nutritional profiles is important to eating well. Information is very important when it comes to eating and underestimating calorie content in foods is detrimental to the health of a person.
