Freedman’s piece in the current issue of the Atlantic titled “How Junk Food Can End Obesity” seems to be trolling how Americans won’t soon give up their fast food, junk food lifestyle, so the makers of that type of food will have to cut the calories in order to help fight obesity.
Processed snacks are a major threat to public health. Freedman doesn’t believe that buying food at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s will make people thinner or that buying food from a farmer’s market will help transform the behavior in the whole community. Instead, Freedman believes that McDonald’s should concoct slimmer Whoppers and lighter Egg McMuffins to help put customers on the track to help eliminate calories.
Freedman also argues that a whole-foods idea deprives people of healthy snacks, and that offering people Big Food is one of the best levers we as a country have. Unfortunately, when people are deprived of calories in one area, they often look for calories in another area, so just taking out calories in an already unhealthy food will not help fight obesity.
