Probiotics: Huge Benefits from Tiny Bacteria

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, August 06, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Probiotics are naturally occurring organisms that congregate in human intestines. It seems that every week a new study is published as to how the tiny organisms have a positive effect on your health but some of the findings are contradictory. Some of these studies are also funded by manufacturers of health products who stand to gain financially from positive results.

Always consider the source of the information when making health decisions. One recent study claims that probiotics ward off illness and can aid in digestion, which is somewhat broad as far as conclusions go. However, another new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition is more specific in its results linking one probiotic strain to fat loss.

Japanese researchers also conducted a study with strong evidence supporting their claims. A group of 210 overweight people was divided into three groups. Each subject in all three groups consumed 7-ounces of fermented milk daily. The milk in two of the groups was supplemented with differing amounts of a probiotic previously linked to fat loss -- Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055. The overweight people in both of these groups, after 12 weeks, lost approximately 8 to 9 percent of a particularly unhealthy type of fat, visceral fat, which builds up around the heart and other organs. The study also showed a reduction of 1 to 3 percent of their belly fat.

The study was conducted by the Snow Brand Company in Japan and co-authored by researcher Yukio Kadooka. He thinks Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 lowers intestinal inflammation to aid in digestion. The intestines function to manage the absorption and digestion of everything you eat, Kadooka says. This particular strain of probiotic is not yet commercially available in the United States. The Snow Brand Company that funded the study also has a bias toward positive results.

This does not invalidate the claims says deputy director of the Canadian Research and Development Centre for Probiotics, Jeremy Burton, PhD. "There's nothing wrong with companies investing in studies, but it's better when the study is backed up by independent research," he adds.
