Claiming to be the highest quality reusable ice ball mold ( ice ball maker ) currently on the market for making jumbo-sized big balls of ice for whiskey, water, and other chilled drinks, this silicone-based ice mold brings an unusual two-piece flexible snap-together design to market with a large filling hole. The company claims that this works quite differently from the majority of ice ball tray products, which usually come as an ice tray with round molds.
According to DeluxIce VP Mark Kraft, "From the very beginning, we wanted to try and create a high-quality ice ball mold that was much easier to fill and much less messy than everything else we saw on the market. Most designs use two ice trays that you have to squeeze together, which causes the excess water to spill out over the sides. Our new snap-together design has a large top-pour opening, which addresses this problem and lets you to create large ice balls easily without all the mess."
Ice ball makers were originally popularized in the bars of the Japanese. Unlike regular ice cubes, big ice rounds typically melt much slower due to the increased surface area of each ice sphere. Most recently, the new Star Trek movie had a scene which featured ice balls, which caused their popularity to soar in the United States as well. DeluxIce's strategy is to capitalize on this emerging trend with their new ice ball mold design.
Last month's successful launch of the product seems to have validated the company's strategy. Kraft continues that during the first month of sales this summer, the company reported much higher demand than anticipated, requiring a big increase in production. "It was a bit of a scramble at first, but manufacturing levels are getting to where they need to be," says Kraft. "It's a good problem to have, obviously."
