(Food-Beverage-News.Com, August 29, 2013 ) Norwich, VT -- Salsa has Mexican flavors, right?
Well, not always, not any more.
"I do make Mexican salsa, in mild, medium and hot," offers Lisa Johnson, owner and creator of Yummy Yammy Sweet Potato Salsas. "And I've just launched a Moroccan one and a Tuscan one."
Wait Tuscan salsa? Moroccan salsa?
"Salsa just means 'sauce', actually," explains Johnson. "All over the world there are many kinds of salsas. I've made some new ones."
New is right, twice over. They are different from typical salsas, which are tomato-based. Yummy Yammy brand salsas have no tomato at all, relying instead on flame-roasted sweet potato as the base for all the flavors. Not only that, her two newest flavors aren't even Mexican in nature.
Johnson states, "Yummy Yammy has been making Mexican-inspired sweet potato salsa for a few years and selling to local stores in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, and we just added these two new flavors this summer. People love them. They're the first American-made Moroccan and Tuscan salsas."
Now all five of her sweet potato salsas are available to shoppers in the continental United States through the largest online shopping platform, Amazon.com.
"It took some work to complete the listings and get the shipping set up," Johnson says, beaming, "and now it's completely worth it, because we can finally offer it to you whether you live in San Diego, Chicago, Topeka, or Miami."
All five flavors are fighting for first place in sales: the familiar Mexican flavor contains sweet potato, GMO-free corn, black beans, lime, and Mexican spices, and comes in Mild, Medium & Hot. "It's not too hot," explains Johnson. "We think of it as 'Vermont Hot', you know, not 'Texas hot.'"
And the Tuscan and Moroccan have become quick favorites. Sweet potato, roasted red peppers, white bean & basil make up the Tuscan Sweet Potato Salsa, and it makes you think you're on vacation in the Italian countryside. Crossing the virtual globe in an instant, the Moroccan Sweet Potato Salsa is sweet potato, curry, lentil & kale. Exotic. Delicious. Different. "They are definitely not your common salsas," offers Johnson.
Her customers so far seem enamored with the taste. "There's a reason this stuff sells out -- I mean, you just want to put your face in it," reasoned a recent customer. "I got it 20 minutes ago, and the jar's empty already," claimed another. "It's delicious and good for you at the same time" is the kind of comment Johnson hears just about every day, once the buyer hears there are only 250 calories in the whole jar, no fat and no sweeteners, and no preservatives or additives.
The press seems to be getting interested, too. Shape Magazine's Healthy Weight Loss Coach listed Yummy Yammy first among her "10 Best Snacks from Fancy Food Show 2013."
Mexican, Moroccan, or Tuscan, it seems the world of salsa is undergoing a yummy revolution.
