Is Drinking Loose Leaf Tea Healthier And More Flavorable Than Tea From Tea Bags?

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, September 10, 2013 ) Tokyo, Tokyo -- Next to water, tea is the second most widely consumed beverage in the world, with Americans consuming over 65 billion servings in 2011 according to the statistics of the Tea Association of the USA.

Tea consumption is increasing in America due to many different factors. "A major reason for this is that many more Americans are starting to realize the many different health benefits of tea," says Daniel Hall, the CEO of Coolahoo.

"There are a lot of new studies showing that tea can help reduce the risk of different cancers, increase metabolism, reduce weight, etc.," Hall goes on to say.

Coolahoo is a new company and sells their Premium Tea Infuser on Amazon, and the Coolahoo website puts out articles and information on tea each week.

We asked Hall if there is a difference in health benefits that comes from drinking loose leaf tea as opposed to drinking tea made from tea bags. Hall says that there can be a big difference and says that this is mostly due to the quality and freshness of the tea.

Hall says, "Most tea that comes in teabags comes from the dust and clippings of processed tea leaves. Moreover, as the tea is very small in size, it quickly dries out and loses the essential oils that contain many of the health benefits in addition to lessening the flavor."

He goes on to say that loose tea is usually better packaged to maintain its freshness. "When you make a cup of tea with really fresh, loose leaf tea, you can really taste the difference, and you can also continue to taste the quality with each successive cup you make with the same leaves."

Hall gives advice for using loose leaf tea:

- Keep it stored correctly
- Use a roomy tea infuser
- Make several small cups instead of one large cup

He says that you should keep it sealed in an air-tight container and stored in a cool, dark area so it won't dry out quickly. When brewed, Hall says to use a tea strainer that has enough room for the tea leaves to expand and infuse. "Don't leave the leaves in the water as the taste can become too strong. Instead, set your tea leaves aside and use them to make another cup when you are ready."

Finally, he says it is best to drink several small cups of tea instead of one large cup in order to keep it fresh and to get the full benefits from the tea leaves.
