Tea Vs. Coffee: The Showdown Continues

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, September 13, 2013 ) Tokyo, Japan -- Even though tea is the second most popular drink in the world behind water, it is not true in America where coffee is king. Americans love their cup of coffee and drink nine times more of it than tea. Coffee is associated with waking up and is consumed at breakfast by many Americans while also being a part of many office breaks.

There are many reasons for this. Part of it is cultural and part of it is due to factors such as availability. Coffee has been available almost anywhere and has become even more popular with the introduction of popular coffee chains such as Starbucks.

Tea on the other hand has not been as popular, and most Americans associate it with, usually sweetened, iced tea. The variety of tea available and brands has always been low.

However, things are changing. Tea is becoming more popular with sales and consumption greatly increasing. The Tea Association of the USA is forecasting tea sales in 2014 to be double that of sales in 2011 of $8.2 billion.

We talked with Daniel Hall, the CEO of Coolahoo, a company that recently started selling the Coolahoo Premium Tea Infuser, to get more information.

Hall says that there are many different reasons for the growing interest in tea.

First, he notes that more stores are opening across the US selling and introducing different types of high quality and unique teas, and that many coffee chains are also starting to add more teas to their menu.

Furthermore, he says that people are getting much more information on tea and are learning that it does have some good health benefits with numerous studies showing that it can help with things such as weight loss, diabetes, and cancer prevention. In addition to the growing information on the health benefits of tea, people are also getting more information about the different kinds of world teas and blends.

People are starting to appreciate the different flavors of teas such as green, herbal, and black teas.

Hall says, "Instead of having coffee during a hectic day, why not try some quality, loose leaf tea. The refreshing aroma of a nice tea along with the flavor can help relieve stress and also help focus your mind while also being beneficial for your health."

In summary, one of the simplest reasons why tea has become more popular is that it's accessible in a larger number of places these days than ever before. As more and more sources continue to raise awareness on the overall benefits of tea, many experts have even started suggesting that, in 3-4 years, tea might actually end up outselling coffee.
