The Nonstick BBQ Grill Mat Gets A Makeover

How to purchase a Nonstick BBQ Grill Mat

(Food-Beverage-News.Com, August 03, 2014 ) Spokane, WA -- Two brothers, Don Caron and Dave Caron, followed very different paths in their lives. Don Caron pursued a career as a film score composer, screenwriter, author and filmmaker based in Spokane WA, while Dave Caron worked as a chef and coach in the Flathead Valley of Montana where he lived since boyhood.

Earlier this year, they decided to do a fundraiser for the Little Guy Wrestling Club, which Dave Caron has coached for many years, by doing a screening of Don Caron's latest feature film, Different Drummers. That collaboration led to unexpected and unrelated results, with the formation of a new company, Chef Caron. The company's first product is the brothers' original take on the nonstick BBQ grill mats.

Grill mats have been around for a while and are a fairly simple product – basically, a rectangle of fiberglass cloth coated with polytetrafluoroethylene, more commonly known as PTFE. The mats are used to cover the grates on an outdoor barbecue to facilitate grilling foods that were previously difficult or impossible to grill.

It turns out; there are many other benefits to the grill mats. They retain the moisture in the foods, provide a more even cooking surface and greatly simplify cleanup. Additionally, they can be cut to any size for a wide variety of nonstick uses in the kitchen.

Chef Dave Caron, who was using the grill mats to reduce the flare-ups that happen on a heavily loaded grill, was frustrated with some aspects of the mats, and decided he could do better. So the brothers redesigned the mats to solve the issues Dave felt needed to be addressed.

They made the mats larger, so the grease would drain away from the flames, and they added layers of PTFE to maximize the nonstick quality. The supplementary layers of PTFE also served to bind the edges of the newly designed mats and eliminate the fraying of the mats' edges that tended to happen after a few uses. The extra thickness of the mats made them significantly more durable and increased the thickness as well, resulting in more even heat distribution.

Encouraged by the success of the grill mats, Chef Caron is planning to redesign a series of kitchen and barbecue tools to make them equally useful to professionals and amateurs alike. The Chef Caron Nonstick BBQ Grill Mats are exclusively available on Amazon and come with an e-book that explains how to use the mats to get the best possible results.
