(Food-Beverage-News.Com, December 02, 2014 ) Mountain View, CA -- A new survey commissioned by Dulce Cocina has identified challenges that consumers face when using cloth oven mitts. According to the survey, approximately 95% of consumers who use cloth mitts cannot use them to handle raw food while more than 45% of the consumers surveyed are not satisfied by the little flexibility that the traditional cloth mitts have.
The survey by Dulce Cocina sought to understand what the primary concern consumers had about using oven mitts. Not surprisingly, a lot of consumers revealed that they trusted silicone oven mitts more when handling raw foods. Unlike traditional oven mitts, silicone oven mitts are waterproof, heat resistant and do not allow bacteria to imbed.
"There is something about cloth mitts that just does not seem right when you are handling raw food," one consumer said.
78% of the surveyed consumers used oven mitts primarily for protection against burns and did not associate the mitts to food contamination. However, according to data released by the Food Standard Agency, cloth oven mitts are among the leading causes of food poisoning. Dulce Cocina has accordingly advised their customers to make the switch from using cloth oven mitts to silicone oven gloves.
"Cloth oven mitts pose food contamination risk on two fronts: on the exterior and on the interior of the mitts." said Mark Henderson, managing director of Dulce Cocina.
The exterior of the cloth mitts poses a danger by coming into contact with raw meats, vegetable, grease, fat and other organic materials that proliferate the growth of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. Once these organic materials have penetrated the interior of the oven gloves, they become tremendously problematic to extricate. This is especially true since many oven gloves are made from materials that are flimsy and can hardly survive laundering. Many consumers reuse the mitts without washing leading to cross contamination.
The interior of the mitts poses another risk of food contamination through organic matter that has come into contact with the wearer's hands. While a lot of people will wash hands before handling food, a lot of food handlers do not care to do so after they have handled food. Any organic substance on the surface of the hands is transferred to the interior of the glove where it imbeds. This may then be transferred to the hands of the subsequent wearer and to other objects in the kitchen and eventually into the food prepared in the kitchen.
To ensure their safety and efficiency, Dulce Cocina advises customers to choose wisely when buying oven mitts. Importantly, effective oven mitts/gloves should be safe and hygienic to use as well as offering real value for the money.
