Cinco de Mayo, which literally translates to "the fifth of May", is celebrated in Mexican-populated US cities and in the city of Puebla in Mexico in commemoration of the victory of the Mexican army over French invaders during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Most people, though, mistake the occasion for Mexico's independence day, which is actually observed every 16th of September.
