(Food-Beverage-News.Com, June 23, 2012 ) Dallas, Texas – Scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne appeared to have found an anti-obesity compound in milk.
Looking for ways to increase the metabolism-boosting gene SIRT1, they pinpointed nicotinamide riboside in milk for protecting mice from obesity despite a high-fat intake. Researchers also found the compound’s properties comparable to resveratrol in red wine.
“This is relatively old knowledge. Several studies on humans have related intake of low-fat dairy products with weight reduction. Although conflicting studies exist, calcium is believed to generate higher levels of calcitrol which results in less fat storage in the body,” Healthy Eating With Ease owner K. Chatman remarked.
However, there are conflicting recommendations on calcium intake. According to the Dietary Reference Intake, individuals aged 9 and above need anywhere between 1,000 to 1,300 mg of calcium a day. Doctors and nutritionists may have a different number in mind for their patients though.
“Take care not to consume too much calcium. It is important to ensure you do not exceed your daily caloric maximums; one of the "healthy breakfast ideas you should not forget. Likewise, you may have to reduce the amount of calories you intake from other food and beverages if you also drink milk and/or consume other dairy products,” said Mr. Chatman.
Lactose-intolerant individuals may opt for soy milk fortified with calcium. Lactose-free milk and cheese are also commercially available. There is also a supplement that aids in digestion of milk sugar.
“Dairy in itself is not designed to be a panacea for weight woes. One must also exercise consistently and adhere to his or her recommended diet regimen to help achieve weight loss," K. A. Chatman said.
