(Food-Beverage-News.Com, September 13, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA – Despite the decrease in coffee prices internationally, the price of coffee in Australia has sky rocketed to an all time high. Coffee prices in Australia are the highest globally at the moment and they continue to mount approximately three times faster than the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Australian coffee supply company, Gilkatho, conducted a survey to determine the price of a cup of coffee. More than 200 cafes from various areas of Australia including, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide were included in the survey.
According to the findings, the most expensive coffee is found in Perth, where the average price of a cup of coffee is $3.87. On average, the people of Perth are bound to pay 18 percent more for a cup of coffee as compared to the people of Sydney where the average price of a cup of is $3.28. After Perth, Brisbane has the most expensive coffee which costs $3.47. The prices in Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne do not have a huge variation as an average cup of coffee costs $3.44, $3.38 and $3.36 respectively.
Chief Executive of Gilkatho, Wayne Fowler said that a cup of coffee does not cost more than 35 cents and the cafes and restaurants in Australia are charging very high prices for no reason. “As suppliers of coffee machines to offices and retail outlets, we know the real cost of a cup, using the same quality beans and the same quality machine is about 35,” Fowler said, according to afr.com.
