(Food-Beverage-News.Com, September 14, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Orchards and cider-mills in Michigan have been facing a shortage of apples due to unfriendly weather. Almost 90% of apple crops have been destroyed by severe weather that has caused a steep price hike of apples and related products for manufacturers. However, the cider-mill owners have decided not to shift this burden to consumers in order to maintain their name next fall.
Details released on the issue, suggest orchards and apple cider mills owners usually expect a handsome profit in the fall but, these circumstances have made things very difficult for them this year and most are struggling to survive.
The mills owners are paying farmers two to three times more than normal prices. It is likely that apple prices will go up in the coming days as it will be impossible for merchants to take such a loss.
Bob Tritten, a Michigan State University Extension Service fruit educator for southeast Michigan, told the media that apple prices are expected to rise up by 50% in the coming days.
According to statistics, the apple crop produced in Michigan last year was about 26 million bushels. This year, it is only expected to produce around 2 million bushels. The huge difference in production has caused the unforeseen price hike.
Meanwhile, cider mill owners are not ready to give up on the business despite the unfortunate circumstances. Retailers said that they may have to cut their demand short due to the shortage and price hike but they will not give it up completely.
Local consumer Jennifer Archey of Rochester Hills said, "I still bought it anyway, but I'll probably buy a little less this year. It's a tradition. I always take my kids on the first day of school. And the doughnuts are great."
Mary Moore of Oxford shared a similair view. She said, "It's an emotional connection with the fall, having cider and doughnuts. It's a rhythm to the life we've grown up with."
